AcadiaGeeks IRC Channel
This article is about #acadiageeks the IRC channel. For the AcadiaGeeks website, see AcadiaGeeks.
The AcadiaGeeks IRC channel, originally started as a place for Sean, Vic and Darrell to talk about non work-related topics while at work, has been in intermittent service since 1999. It has always run on Vic's Linux server mvgrafx, with the exception being the time that the system grenaded some hardware, and both web and IRC services were moved to Onefish, Sean's server, for a short period of time.
The channel now houses a host of around 5-10 regulars and semi-regulars. The atmosphere of the channel can generally be regarded as one of inappropriate humor and self importance. The users of the channel tend to be elitist about one or more things, from OS preference, brand loyalty, road bike allegiances or general self-superiority. Newcomers to the channel are cautioned that, in all likeliness, you will NOT be welcomed at first, and anything you say or do will be cause for mockery.
That being said, the channel regulars tend to act the same way towards each other, tearing each other apart over typing skills, lifestyle choices, or imagined homosexuality. The regulars of the channel all tend to be very good friends despite this seeming disparity, and tend to carry the playfully negative interaction over into real life interactions with each other.
The channel presence is maintained by an IRC "bot", AGBot, which functions as both a channel operator and IRC toy.
